Tumor associated calcium signal transducer 2 (TACSTD2), also known as TROP-2, is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein encoded by an intronless gene located on chromosome 1p32.1. It functions as a cell surface receptor that transduces calcium signals and is involved in cell-cell adhesion. TACSTD2 is expressed in various epithelial tissues and plays a role in regulating cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. The protein has a molecular weight of 35-50 kDa and contains extracellular, transmembrane, and cytoplasmic domains. TACSTD2 is overexpressed in multiple types of epithelial cancers, including colorectal, breast, and lung cancers, where it is associated with tumor progression and poor prognosis. In non-cancerous conditions, mutations in TACSTD2 can cause gelatinous drop-like corneal dystrophy, an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by severe corneal amyloidosis.
