Small nuclear ribonucleoprotein polypeptide F (SNRPF) is a core Sm protein that serves as an essential component of the spliceosomal small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs), including U1, U2, U4, U5, and the minor U12 complexes. It plays a fundamental role in pre-mRNA splicing by enabling RNA binding and participating in the assembly of the spliceosome within the methylosome. SNRPF is also a component of the U7 snRNP, which is required for the 3'-end processing of histone mRNA. It localizes to both the cytosol and the nucleus, interacting with proteins such as DDX20 and other Sm polypeptides to facilitate RNA processing. Clinically, SNRPF is highly relevant to spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a severe neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the loss of motor neurons and progressive muscle wasting. Furthermore, it has been identified as a significant biomarker in nasopharynx carcinoma, reflecting its critical involvement in the RNA metabolism pathways that are often disrupted in neuromuscular and oncological diseases.
