Phospholipase A2 group VII (PLA2G7) is a secreted, calcium-independent phospholipase A2 that circulates in the blood primarily bound to LDL and HDL. Also known as lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2), it hydrolyzes the sn-2 ester bond of phospholipids, specifically targeting short-chain or oxidized fatty acyl groups. This activity inactivates platelet-activating factor (PAF) and degrades pro-inflammatory oxidized phospholipids, thereby modulating vascular inflammation. Clinically, elevated levels of circulating PLA2G7 mass or activity are strongly associated with atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and ischemic stroke. Consequently, it is widely utilized as a biomarker for vascular inflammation and plaque instability and is considered a potential therapeutic target for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disorders.
