Peroxiredoxin 1 (Peroxiredoxin-1) is a cytosolic antioxidant enzyme that plays a central role in maintaining cellular redox homeostasis by catalyzing the thioredoxin-dependent reduction of hydrogen peroxide and alkyl hydroperoxides. Beyond its scavenger function, it acts as a molecular sensor for hydrogen peroxide in various signaling pathways, modulating cell proliferation, differentiation, and immune responses. It is particularly involved in signaling downstream of growth factors and TNF-alpha. Peroxiredoxin-1 is constitutively expressed in most tissues and is further induced by oxidative stress. Clinically, the protein is frequently dysregulated in multiple malignancies, including pancreatic, esophageal, and lung cancers, where it can act as either a tumor suppressor or an oncogenic driver depending on the cellular context.
