Integrin subunit alpha 11 (ITGA11) is a protein encoded by the ITGA11 gene and functions as an alpha integrin, forming a heterodimer with beta 1 integrin to create the α11β1 complex. This complex contains an I domain and acts as a critical collagen receptor, primarily expressed by stromal fibroblasts, mesenchymal stem cells, and muscle tissue, facilitating cell adhesion to the extracellular matrix and playing a role in osteogenic responses through high-affinity binding to Osteolectin. ITGA11 is expressed in various tissues, including bone marrow, skeletal muscle, and connective tissues, and its deficiency in mice leads to growth retardation and bone abnormalities. Disease associations include increased ITGA11 expression in fibrotic conditions such as liver cirrhosis, renal fibrosis, and lung fibrosis, as well as upregulation in the tumor stroma of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, where it influences myofibroblast differentiation and tumor cell behavior.
