Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP) is a protein encoded by the GFAP gene in humans. It is a type III intermediate filament (IF) protein that is expressed by numerous cell types of the central nervous system, including astrocytes and ependymal cells during development. GFAP is a member of the intermediate filament family of proteins, which form networks that provide support and strength to cells, and it is specifically found in the astroglial cytoskeleton within the central nervous system. Several molecules of GFAP bind together to form the type of intermediate filament found in astroglial cells, which support and nourish cells in the brain and spinal cord. Mutations in the GFAP gene can lead to Alexander disease, a rare neurological disorder. The protein is used as a marker to distinguish astrocytes from other glial cells. It is involved in controlling the shape, movement, and function of astroglial cells, and its exact function is still not fully understood.
