Fibroblast growth factor binding protein 1 (FGFBP1), also known as FGF-BP or HBP17, is a secreted protein that functions as a carrier for fibroblast growth factors (FGFs), enhancing their bioavailability and activity within tissues. Encoded by the FGFBP1 gene in humans, this protein plays a crucial role in cell proliferation and other processes such as skin carcinogenesis and inflammation. FGFBP1 interacts with various FGFs, including FGF1 and FGF2, as well as with perlecan, a heparan sulfate proteoglycan. This protein acts as a chaperone, releasing FGFs from the extracellular matrix storage and presenting them to their cognate receptors, thereby increasing their mitogenic activity.
