Tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 6 (FAS), also known as CD95, is a type I transmembrane protein that plays a crucial role in regulating apoptosis, or programmed cell death. It is primarily expressed on the surface of various immune cells and is activated upon binding to its ligand, Fas ligand (FasL), which leads to the formation of a death-inducing signaling complex (DISC). This process activates caspases, triggering a cascade of events that culminate in apoptosis. Dysregulation of FAS has been implicated in several diseases, particularly autoimmune disorders, where excessive apoptosis can lead to tissue damage, and cancers, such as lymphomas, where tumor cells may downregulate FAS to evade immune-mediated cell death.
