KRT19 (Keratin 19) is a type I cytokeratin protein that plays a crucial role in various cancers. It is highly expressed in many epithelial tumors like ovarian, breast, and lung cancers, and is associated with cancer progression, metastasis, and poor prognosis.KRT19 regulates cancer stem cell properties, proliferation, invasion, and chemotherapy resistance, though its exact mechanisms seem to be context-dependent. In ovarian cancer, KRT19 is a promising prognostic biomarker that correlates with tumor immune infiltration and expression of immunomodulators. In breast cancer, KRT19 interacts with the β-catenin/RAC1 complex to promote epithelial-mesenchymal transition and metastasis. However, its role can be contradictory in some breast cancer subtypes. In lung cancer, high KRT19 expression is an independent prognostic factor for poor survival, especially in squamous cell carcinoma.
