CD36 molecule (CD36 blood group) (CD36) is a multifunctional class B scavenger receptor and heavily glycosylated membrane glycoprotein that facilitates the uptake of long-chain fatty acids and other diverse ligands. It binds to thrombospondin, collagen, oxidized LDL, and anionic phospholipids, playing a central role in cell adhesion, lipid metabolism, and innate immune signaling. CD36 is highly expressed in platelets, macrophages, and adipocytes, where it contributes to foam cell formation and metabolic homeostasis. Clinically, pathogenic variants or deficiency of CD36 lead to platelet glycoprotein IV deficiency, an inherited condition associated with altered platelet reactivity and increased risk of cardiometabolic diseases and atherosclerosis.
