C-reactive protein (C-Reactive Protein) is a pentameric acute‑phase protein (pentraxin family) encoded by the CRP gene on chromosome 1, synthesized mainly by hepatocytes in response to interleukin‑6 and other cytokines, and widely used as a sensitive biomarker of systemic inflammation. It binds phosphocholine on microbial surfaces and damaged cells, activating complement and opsonization, thus linking innate immunity to clearance of pathogens and necrotic debris. High‑sensitivity CRP (hsCRP) assays quantify low‑grade inflammation relevant to cardiometabolic disease risk. Persistently elevated CRP is associated with increased risk of coronary artery disease, stroke, and peripheral artery disease, and may correlate more strongly with fatal than nonfatal coronary events. Elevated CRP also tracks with obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes, and common CRP and IL6 locus variants influence baseline CRP levels and cardiovascular risk. Chronic CRP elevation further associates with neurodegenerative and other chronic inflammatory diseases.
