Clone REA1517 recognizes GLUT4, also known as Glucose transporter type 4 which is encoded by the SLC2A4 gene. GLUT4 is an insulin-regulated glucose transporter responsible for insulin-regulated glucose uptake into fat and muscle cells. In the absence of insulin, GLUT4 is mainly found in intracellular vesicles referred to as GLUT4 storage vesicles (GSVs), primarily in adipose tissues and striated muscle (skeletal and cardiac). Mutations in this gene have been associated with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).
