Clone REA222 recognizes rat CD8b, a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily also known as T cell surface glycoprotein Lyt-3. CD8b is expressed on cytotoxic T cells, thymocytes, and macrophages as a heterodimer with CD8a. CD8 identifies cytotoxic/suppressor T cells that interact with MHC class I bearing targets and plays a role in the process of T cell mediated killing. Flow cytometric analysis showed that CD8 T cells from lymph nodes or spleen of normal rats almost exclusively express the α/β heterodimer, regardless of the T cell receptor isotype.
