Clone REA1504 recognizes the CD236 antigen, a membrane protein also known as Glyophorin C (GPC), which is found on erythrocytes. CD236 is part of the membrane-cytoskeleton complex and interacts with protein 4.1R, which is crucial for maintaining the mechanical integrity of erythrocytes. CD236 acts as a receptor for specific pathogens and may also function in cell adhesion. It is part of the Gerbich blood system. Mutations or deletions in this protein can result in rare blood group phenotypes.
