Clone REA448 recognizes the human CD227 antigen, a single-pass type I membrane protein which is also known as mucin-1 (MUC-1), episialin, or epithelial membrane antigen (EMA). CD227 is a heterodimeric epithelial cell glycoprotein that is normally expressed at low levels on the apical surface of epithelial cells and on some hematopoietic cell lineages including subsets of T cells, B cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells. In most adenocarcinomas and in other inflammatory diseases of epithelial tissues, CD227 is overexpressed and loses the polarity of its expression. On normal epithelia, CD227 is
